Hey, it seems we're all pretty shot sighted,
I made these choices and I can't deny them
On this, the anniversary of my birth.
I won't stand up and try to fight it,
We were young and we tried to stem the tide
But time's a river that knows no bounds.

And now, my world has come crashing down.
And yes, this is when it hurts.
But brace yourselves-- there's more to come.
Oh, I hope that everything gets worse.

They say to me "Happy Birthday,"
And I accept it without blinking.
But every time I hear those words
You know it gets me thinking.

I'm just another year colder,
Another year more bitter.
I'm another year bolder,
Just a more clever sinner.

I'm just another day meaner,
I'm sorry its come to this.
Happy Birthday to Me,
And to another year amiss.

I'd hoped it would be over,
I'd hoped God would have taken me away.
I'd hoped he'd have mercy,
And gifted me with oblivion.

I guess I'm not that lucky.
So maybe I should just deal.
I'll keep a facade and seem plucky,
And let the lie become real.

And they sing
"Happy Birthday,"
And I nod and I wave.
And they say
"Happy Birthday,"
But its the same as yesterday.
And they shout
"We love you Son, You're becoming a better man."
I bite my tongue and keep my mouth in check,
Because they've already forgotten who I am.
A day late for my Birthday... eh.
